Ironically though “Scarred” will be our newest release, its lyrics are the first ones I (Lisa) ever wrote, over 30+ years ago. The truth is, I never intended to write them, I was writing a letter to a friend when they just seemed to take over my hand as they came out of nowhere, writing themselves, and I was just the conduit they chose. They were dark, almost heartbreaking and my tears flowed after writing them as though I'd just had a glimpse into some poor young woman's life, someone who I wanted to throw my arms around and comfort in her pain. But I couldn't, there was no young woman there, I was alone and there were only these words, a tragic story, one so powerful that they burrowed themselves inside me and I couldn't forget them.
It wasn't until I met Drew that I had any hope that they would finally become the song they were meant to become, a sad story that was meant to be told, but a piece was still missing. They still needed a “voice”. Then we started working with Anna…Anna whose voice is so expressive, hypnotic, and haunting that I KNEW she was truly the final missing piece. She would be the one to bring “Scarred” to life and soon it will be heard by all who choose to listen.
Musically, I can only describe it as riding a roller coaster while being completely blindfolded. “Scarred” has two key changes and each piece of the story/song holds a different tempo, it's own unique texture and tone. Drew has spent numerous hours weaving together the instrumentation, turning the music (our most complicated piece yet) into a story all in itself.
Vocally Anna has outdone herself, the feelings that she breathes into each segment can be heard in her voice as she takes us on a sonic journey, one of ups and downs, until the very end when she graces us with hope.
Both Drew and Anna have my greatest respect and admiration for their heart and for their talent. I will never be able to thank them enough for bringing “Scarred” to life. I could never hug that invisible young woman who inspired me, but I hope having her story finally told will make her proud.
“Scarred” will be loved by some, others, it may make a bit uncomfortable with it's rawness, BUT what it won't be is forgettable.
